A number of Longwall’s Principals have backgrounds that include teaching and education. But the Longwall “educational” approach, or its “work-with-you-whatever-the-background” mindset, is a truly intrinsic feature of the Longwall Principals in all cases - for whoever might want that feature to be switched on. (And, if not, no issues. It is turned down to the volume desired.)


Professor Randy Cohen is certainly at the head of the list, as he taught Finance and Investments at Harvard and M.I.T. for over 20 years, and more recently has worked with young people in the Harvard Business School’s Entrepreneurship Program. Kerry Stirton was also a Teaching Fellow at Harvard College back in the day, and after ten years of post-secondary education, Kerry is very much wired to pace with clients in a manner that works best for them - senior family members and more junior family members alike. This same developmental orientation is thankfully true for the rest of the calming Longwall Team as well.


Especially when including the related domains of trusts, estates, and taxes, the overall investment world has become exceedingly complex. There is a dizzying array of investment classes, funds, securities, instruments, and markets to choose from. And there are many different ways to structure a portfolio. And there are numerous forms of risk that have to be accounted for, watched, and ultimately managed - against objectives that are not always as clear as they might be! What Is A Family Office?


Many would simply refer to a family office as a private wealth management advisory firm that serves high-net-worth individuals and their families.


But family offices are different from traditional wealth management firms since they usually look to provide a holistic solution to managing the financial and investment needs of an affluent family or individual. For example, in addition to investment management, family offices offer estate planning, charitable giving, investment education, insurance, and tax advice. In various forms and with various degrees of emphasis, Longwall Family Office also offers these services. But it is not just a bundle of services that defines the family office for the Longwall Partners. There is also an attitude, a style of operation, and a culture that is brought to bear on the various offerings of the Firm.


At Longwall, we think that a family investment office should be a place where capital is managed with the utmost of care, professionalism, and competency, and where there is as much as practically possible a very close alignment of interests. To a family client at Longwall, it should not feel as if the Firm is an outside service provider dealing with their investments. Rather, it should feel as if client families are inside the office, working with and conversing with their own partners and experts, not at arms’ length but in an immediate and familiar fashion. The dialogues should be candid. The understanding of the family’s needs and particularities should be detailed and deep. There should be a great deal of back and forth. If a client wants to see the development of a particular investment plan or specific opportunity, as the due diligence is coming along, then that is what they should get. In this way, the investment recommendations and the choices that are ultimately made will be significantly stronger, and better understood.


Finally, a word or two on “education” and on solid “alignment” within a family office setting. While some people see such instances of co-investment as setting up potential conflicts of interest (and we can see how that could be so characterized) we see it quite differently and believe that it is ideal when a Longwall Partner is able to invest in the same holdings or opportunities as family clients. We, therefore, live with similar risks and rewards. Story Behind Our Name

Longwall was the name chosen by all the Founders. It actually came quite easily to us, even though that task is often a real challenge for a firm.


Longwall is the name of a long street in Oxford, England, bordering Magdalen College of the University of Oxford where Kerry Stirton attended as a Rhodes Scholar. Lining the whole length of Longwall Street is a long, high wall that has protected the College since it was founded in 1458; keeping out unwanted intruders. The long and protected wall allowed the residents of the university to think calmly inside it, do good research, make good decisions, and protect the valuable assets of the college for generations.


In Westport, Connecticut, where Longwall Family Office is based, there are many, many long stone walls, protecting family assets as best they can, and providing comfort to the families in the houses behind them.


The Longwall Partners liked the imagery and the metaphor. We want to guard your assets, protect them, make them more valuable, and keep unwanted risks away from them. For the generations.
